These illustrations were created to represent what a wandering spleen can look like in comparison to a normal one. I worked in collaboration with Dr Clare Lamb at University of Dundee CAHID to develop this visual aid for teaching about anatomical variation.
Most of the imagery depicting wandering spleens are in the form of cross sections of CT scans, so it can be difficult for one to visualize the shift in placement relative to the rest of the organs in the abdominal cavity.
Two sets of illustrations were created, one for highlighting the general positioning of the spleen in the abdomen from a coronal perspective, and the other a more detailed closeup of the spleen and related organs with how they can be affected by this variation. The overall objective of these illustrations is to help students gain a clearer understanding of how this variation can present, beyond just viewing CT cross sections.
